The implementation of free meals for children in reception and year KS1 of state run schools has been a fundamental change to school meal provision, meaning that many primary schools have had to cater for much higher numbers. It also means that many parents no longer have the packed lunch option, and therefore many children are experiencing school lunches who would not have done so otherwise.

The objective of this report is to explore the catering within schools and academies in the UK. It will examine the opinions of parents and children, their preferences towards packed lunches or school meals, and the factors that influence decisions in this area. The report will also look at general attitudes towards food provided as well as parent opinions on the impact of government regulation, free meals for young children, and what can be done in the future to improve provision.

This report follows on from the YouGov Reports publication: Schools and Academies Catering 2014. The objective of this report is to examine and compare the catering of schools and academies in the UK. Data are compared with the previous surveys where relevant to identify any changes that have occurred.

The new survey questioned 2,064 parents with children aged 4-16 attending school/academy as well as 272 children aged 8-16 attending school/academy.
